Michael Kamen's arrangements are a little too busy and florid, but overall, it works. They dabble in country and psychedelia but it is simply substandard work.Ī reasonably successful experiment and an album which renders Metallica's music with the widescreen mythic grandeur that they've been reaching for their entire career.

These records yielded their only 90's classics ("Fuel", "The Memory Remains"), but the rest is stunningly forgettable and outright boring. They sound tired and the emotions feel forced. I have a problem with turgid songwriting and listless playing. I don't have any issue with Metallica broadening their horizons or exploring new sounds. But most people rock out to "Enter Sandman" when it plays. Most people might not consider themselves metalheads. And for better and worse, this is really the album which codified the sound of the modern mid tempo metal anthem. The songwriting is the most refined and focused they'd done up to that point. The album which turned Metallica into METALLICA!!!!! It's also the last truly great album this band made. Jason Newsted makes his debut appearance on this album and unfortunately, you can barely hear him. "The Frayed Ends of Sanity", "Dyers Eve", "The Shortest Straw", "One", and the title track are all standouts. They are still kicking ass all over the place. It's very proggy, but I don't regard that as a negative. Metallica are ascendant at this point in their career and they took this opportunity to make a Serious Metal Record.

Thrash juggernauts ("Damage Inc.", "Battery", "Master of Puppets"), mid tempo chuggers ("The Thing That Should Not Be"), and even a proggy instrumental ("Orion") reveal a band at the peak of their powers. "For Whom the Bell Tolls", "Ride the Lightning", "Creeping Death", and the criminally underrated "Trapped Under Ice" make this album mandatory.Īn undeniably great album whose stature is diminished only by the fact that it is the follow up to "Ride the Lightning." Metallica are trading in on their considerable strengths and laying down analogues of each of the great tracks on RTL. There aren't any filler tracks and the classic jams abound. They have not surpassed the unstoppable brilliance of this record. This album not only belongs in every metal collection, it belongs in any serious rock music collection. The one absolutely essential, stone cold classic in the canon. "Seek and Destroy", "Hit the Lights", "Whiplash" and the eternal anthem, "Metal Militia" make this album absolutely essential for headbangers everywhere. And the tunes practically DEMAND that you throw the goat and bang your head. James Hetfield's vocals can only be described as a rabid, feral bark. The only record in the catalog to which I would assign the label "Thrash" without hesitation. Righteously ass kicking blood and guts heavy metal. I've gone through the entire Metallica catalog and here are my personal ratings and comments.
